Our business model at Malia Designs was born out of our wholehearted belief that the economic empowerment of women can change the world. As a business that supports equality, we are excited to partner with LeanIn.org (a non-profit organization founded by Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg) to highlight the unfairness of the gender pay gap on Black Women’s Equal Pay Day.
On average, women are paid 20% less than men. This year women needed to continue working until April 4, 2017 to match what men were paid in 2016. In efforts to bring awareness to this injustice, LeanIn.org partnered with hundreds of businesses including Lyft and LUNA Bar to offer 20% off discount specials.
If you dissect this issue even further to analyze the pay gap between ethnicities, it becomes much more heartbreaking as Black women are paid 37% less, and Hispanic women are paid 46% less. According to the IWPR, at this rate Black women will not see equal pay until 2124.
Businesses like ours have decided to come together with LeanIn.org to bring attention to this very real injustice by offering 37% off discounts to all customers on Black Women’s Equal Pay Day on Monday, July 31, 2017.
